Bathroom Radiators & Heated Towel Rails - FAQ

Is there a difference between a bathroom radiator and a heated towel rail?

At first sight, both bathroom radiators and heated towel rails seem similar. Yet, there is a crucial difference between them - A bathroom radiator is primarily designed to provide warmth and heat the entire bathroom space. A heated towel rail is specifically designed to warm and dry towels. While both can emit heat, their primary functions differ: heating the room versus warming towels.

Can you use a heated towel rail as a radiator?

Yes and no. While a heated towel rail could emit heat and contribute to warming a small bathroom to some extent, they were never designed to function as a primary radiator.
That said, today, most bathroom radiators feature a towel rail in their design, therefore, allowing you to use a single appliance for both purposes - as a radiator and a towel rail.

What are the different types of bathroom radiators?

There are several different types of bathroom radiators that you could choose from:

  • Panel Radiators that consist of metal panels with fins or convection channels to distribute heat efficiently.
  • Towel Radiators with horizontal bars or rails for hanging towels. These bathroom radiators combine the functionality of a radiator with a heated towel rail.
  • Column Radiators that feature vertical columns or tubes that provide a stylish and traditional look.
  • Electric Radiators that operate independently of the central heating system and are powered by electricity. They offer flexibility in terms of installation and control, allowing for individual temperature adjustments.

How much do bathroom radiators cost, typically?

Prices for a small aluminium radiator start at around €130, with the price depending on the size of the radiator. Bigger radiators, and towel radiators will cost up to €300 or more, and once again, the final price will depend on the size, material, and several other factors.

What to consider when choosing a bathroom radiator?

When choosing a radiator for your bathroom, you should consider the following:

  • Radiator type and features. You should think of whether you want a radiator or a towel rail, for example.
  • Heat output. Check whether that the radiator provides sufficient heat output to effectively warm your bathroom.
  • Size and space. Make sure that your desired radiator fits well without obstructing other fixtures or impeding movement.
  • Moisture resistance. Bathrooms are humid environments, so choose a radiator that is specifically designed to withstand moisture and prevent rust or corrosion.
